At its peak, DIGG reached over 38 million monthly users. Rose initially wireframed and designed the platform himself, then hired Owen Byrne as the first developer through Elance. Early team members included Dan Huard (community), Ron Gorodetzky (engineering), and Daniel Burka (design and Kevin’s product thought partner). Kevin later hired Jay Adelson to replace him as CEO and help with fundraising, allowing him to focus on product development. Digg pioneered concepts that would later become standard across social media, including voting as a signal for algorithmic content suggestions (patents sold to LinkedIn) and crowd-curated news. 2. 2004October ### Revision3 Co-Founder One of the first internet television networks, co-founded with Dan Huard and Keith Harrison. David Prager quickly joined the founding team and Jay Adelson was the company's first investor, later serving as CEO. The network produced pioneering shows including: - Diggnation (tech/comedy with Rose and Alex Albrecht) - Systm (deep-dive tech tutorials with Rose and Dan Huard) - Tekzilla (tech reviews and advice with Patrick Norton) Discovery Communications acquired Revision3 in 2012 for over $30 million, under the leadership of Jim Louderback, marking one of the first major acquisitions of a digital-first video network. 3. 2005July ### Diggnation Co-Founder A weekly tech/comedy video podcast hosted by Rose and Alex Albrecht, running from 2005-2012\. The show regularly drew over 250,000+ viewers per episode and helped establish the podcast medium. In addition to discussing top Digg stories, it featured notable guests including Jimmy Fallon, Mark Cuban, Rachel Maddow, Ashton Kutcher among others. 4. 2007 ### Pownce Co-Founder A social networking and micro-blogging platform co-founded with Leah Culver and Daniel Burka. Pownce innovated by allowing users to share files, events, and links in addition to messages. The platform was acquired by Six Apart in 2008. 5. 2010 ### FOUNDATION Founder A pioneering long-form interview series featuring intimate conversations with tech luminaries including Jack Dorsey, Ev Williams, Elon Musk, Gary Vaynerchuk, Tony Hawk, Chad Hurley, Dennis Crowley, Ben Horowitz, Matt Mullenweg, and Naval Ravikant. The show helped establish the format of in-depth, personal tech conversations that would later become standard in tech podcasting. 6. 2012–2015 ### Google Ventures General Partner Investments include Ripple (Google’s first crypto investment), Nextdoor, Medium, Uber (a David Krane led deal), and Blue Bottle Coffee. His focus areas included consumer internet, mobile, and cryptocurrency. 7. 2015 ### Watchville Co-Founder A mobile app for watch enthusiasts that aggregated news and provided accurate time synchronization. Watchville was the world’s largest watch news app, which led to the merger and Rose's involvement with HODINKEE. 8. 2017 ### ZERO Founder An intermittent fasting app that has helped millions track their fasting windows and goals. The app combined Rose's interests in technology and wellness, offering features like fasting timers, progress tracking, and educational content. 9. 2017 ### OAK Founder A meditation app designed to make mindfulness more accessible downloaded by millions of users. The app reflected Rose's personal commitment to meditation, later leading him to a dedicated Zen practice. Oak offers guided meditations and breathing exercises in a minimalist interface, free of charge. Yearning for a deeper experience led Rose to invest in The Way, a full featured app with roots in Zen. 10. 2017 ### True Ventures Partner (now Fund Advisor) Rose helped support and mentor founders across True's portfolio of 500+ companies, with $3.8B+ in assets under management. 11. 2019–2021 ### HODINKEE CEO Rose served as CEO of the premier watch media platform, helping build and scale their e-commerce offerings, mobile apps, and launch several successful limited edition collaborations with major watch brands. 12. 2021 ### PROOF Co-Founder A Web3 media and technology company that created the highly successful Moonbirds NFT collection. PROOF was acquired by Yuga Labs in 2023. 13. 2025 ### Digg (rebooted) Founder & Chairman Rose has joined forces with former rival and Reddit Co-Founder, Alexis Ohanian, along with Justin Mezzell (Digg’s incoming CEO) to reboot and reimagine the Digg brand, launching a new social news platform later this year. ## Posts ### Zen: Stop Trying to Quiet Your Mind | Henry Shukman URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/stop-trying-to-quiet-your-mind-henry/ Last updated: 2026-10-14T01:59:48.000Z For a long time, I approached meditation like a workout. Put in the time, keep showing up, and eventually my mind would get quieter. Henry Shukman offered a different image that has stayed with me. Imagine a young horse running around a meadow, with its mother quietly watching nearby. The horse has all this energy. The mother lets it run. As your meditation practice deepens, Henry says, the meadow gets bigger. Your thoughts can keep moving. You have more space around them. I sat down with Henry, a Zen teacher, author, and poet, in New Mexico just before heading into a weeklong meditation retreat. We started with the busy mind and ended up talking about awakening, grief, love, and what it means to be fully human. What struck me about the meadow is how much pressure it takes off. So much of self-improvement gives us another thing to fix about ourselves. Henry’s approach invites us to notice how tightly we’re holding everything. Perhaps peace is something we gradually learn to stop interfering with. That becomes very practical when we talk about reactivity. Someone says something, a small irritation lands, and suddenly it has taken over our afternoon. Henry describes how practice helps us recognize that reaction and give it room to soften. We can still address whatever happened. We just have a little more freedom in how we respond. A few other moments I loved: **The pressure to “get” meditation.** We explore how chasing a particular experience can become another source of tension, and why ordinary, consistent practice matters. **Awakening and being human.** Henry talks about cherishing his emotions and feelings. As he puts it, he has no interest in becoming a “heartless sort of Zen robot.” **Grief and love.** We get into what it means to stay open to both, including the parts we’d often rather avoid. **Learning to live from the heart.** Henry shares his experience after a bicycle accident and how his years of practice supported him as he dealt with the effects of a concussion. We also get into [The Way](https://www.thewayapp.com/?ref=kevinrose.com), the meditation app Henry co-created. I was curious about its sequential approach: following one path over time, with each session building on the last. If you’ve ever sat down to meditate and immediately decided you were bad at it, I think you’ll get a lot from this conversation. Let me know what stays with you. [Get your free month of Snipd here.](https://link.snipd.com/Cx7S/kevinrose?ref=kevinrose.com) We get into: the bicycle commute in Zurich (and the Sam Altman podcast) that started Snipd, the Amazon-reviews neural net that convinced him to bet on AI five years before ChatGPT, why Snipd has data Apple, Spotify and YouTube don’t have, why his three-person team specifically refuses to build an ad-skipping feature, why today’s podcast advertising is a “huge hack” and the YouTube-style model that should replace it, the Snipd DJ stringing 5-to-10-minute moderated supercuts across every show you’d never get to, why audiobook publishers are too paranoid to license cleanly, Kevin’s blunt verdict on ElevenLabs voices (“5 minutes and you wanna blow your brains out”), and the open API Snipd is opening for Claude, Codex, and OpenClaw - so your AI agent can finally tap into everything you’ve ever listened to. Whether you make podcasts, build with AI, or just want a smarter way to listen, this one’s for you. URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/ais-top-investor-1-have-seen-god/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:13:12.000Z New episode just dropped. I sat down with Anish Acharya, Partner at Andreessen Horowitz (A16Z) and one of the most plugged-in consumer investors in tech. We worked together at Google years ago, and what I love about Anish is that he’s not just writing checks - he’s a programmer. He’s in the code every day, same as me. We got into all of it: why I’ll never look at code again, the personal injury lawyer who won the global Claude Code hackathon by building software that rivals a venture-backed startup, why SaaS is getting demolished, and Anish’s wildest prediction - that America will get the 4-day work week the same way it solved obesity. Not through discipline. Through Ozempic. I also made the mistake of pitching my wife on using AI agents to settle our marriage arguments. It did not go well. Whether you’re deep in the 1% or wondering what the hell we’re all so excited about, this one’s for you. Polsia is a platform where you type in a business idea and AI agents instantly go to work building it for you. From market research and landing pages to Meta ad campaigns and cold outreach, Polsia spins up autonomous agents that function like a full startup team. Ben shares how he went from building alone with AI 16 hours a day to hitting product–market fit, scaling to millions in ARR as a one-person company, and why he believes AGI is already here. Whether you’re a non-technical dreamer with a business idea or a seasoned builder rethinking what’s possible, this conversation offers a front-row seat to the solopreneur revolution. --- ## Topics Covered - How building alone with AI for a year led Ben to realize agents could replace an entire startup team - The origin of the name *Polsia* (”AI Slop” spelled backwards) and why he stopped caring what investors think - [Rick Rubin’s creative philosophy](https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Act-Way-Being/dp/0593652886?ref=kevinrose.com) and why building for yourself, not others, is the only way to survive the grind - [Universal Paperclips](https://www.decisionproblem.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) as design inspiration: choosing weird over polished on purpose - Why Polsia’s autonomous “night shift” cycle is both a product decision and a cost + feedback loop strategy - The Meta ads engine: click a button, set a budget, and AI creates Sora-generated UGC video ads deployed on your behalf - Scaling pain as a solo founder: rate limits, infrastructure meltdowns, and building support agents to fix what broke - Why Ben refuses to hire, “eating his own dog food” so customers never face a problem he hasn’t solved - The case that 80% autonomous companies will outcompete everyone else within the next few years - Travis Kalanick as mentor, the “push through the pain” philosophy, and five years at [CloudKitchens](https://cloudkitchens.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) - Polsia’s long-term vision: an AI-native economy with investor agents, micro-acquisitions, and a more democratic American dream - Opus vs. Codex: Ben’s dual-model workflow for pragmatic shipping and ruthless bug-finding - Why the solo billion-dollar company isn’t about ego, it’s a wake-up call --- ## Links - **Polsia** — [https://polsia.ai](https://polsia.ai/?ref=kevinrose.com) - **Polsia Live Dashboard** — [https://polsia.ai/live](https://polsia.ai/live?ref=kevinrose.com) - [**Ben Cera on X**](https://x.com/bencera?ref=kevinrose.com) **(Twitter)** - [**Universal Paperclips**](https://www.decisionproblem.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) — the clicker game that inspired Polsia’s design ### Long time... Random Show, New Digg, Big Updates 🙏 URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/long-time-random-show-new-digg-big/ Last updated: 2026-10-14T20:30:48.000Z # Friends, Clearly I was serious when I said I didn’t want to overwhelm your inbox with too many emails. It’s been a few months since my last update, but I’ve got quite the action-packed one for you. --- ### Project updates — It’s never been a better time to build in tech. My toolkit keeps getting better — ChatGPT 5.2 and Gemini 3 just dropped, and combined with my daily drivers (Opus 4.5, Cursor 2), I’ve finally become a productive nights-and-weekends engineer. So, what am I up to? A lot. ### 🪏 Digg Rebooted Justin continues to lead Digg’s day-to-day operations as CEO and has assembled an exceptional team. They are progressing rapidly toward launching open communities early next year. That will mark the beginning of the real creative phase — when the more ambitious ideas that set Digg apart can come to life. By early next year, we will finally be positioned to answer the key question: “How is this different from Reddit?” ### 🧪 Digg Labs My nights and weekends are spent prototyping the wilder side of community formation and sharing, rethinking everything from the ground up. This is our tiny skunkworks lab (just two of us), with the goal of testing new types of trusted social interactions. Early next year, we will unveil an early alpha of a fun idea around micro private communities. In a world where AI slop takes over social, this will be a very protected and private space. Alpha invites coming your way soon 💥. ### 🍁 Oak Is Back Some of you may remember Oak, the meditation and breathing app I built years ago. With close to 2M downloads, 30k reviews (4.8 stars), and after five years without updates, it’s been looking for some love and needs to be rewritten. The buddy who took it over many years ago has returned it to me, so I’m back at the wheel. The plan: new breathing exercises, a social gratitude journal, a couple of [Henry Shukman meditations](https://www.thewayapp.com/?ref=kevinrose.com), and more. If you’re a ***mid-to senior-level React Native or Flutter engineer*** — ideally based in LA or willing to relocate — I’d love to hear from you. You’d be working out of my incubator space alongside me. AI-first (you live in Cursor) is a must. This isn’t a remote gig; it’s a build-together opportunity. Reply to this email with your X handle/GitHub/LinkedIn if that sounds like your kind of thing. ### 🔮 The Next (Next) I’m thrilled to tease a new project I’ve been quietly building: a live technology interview show called *The Next (Next)*. If you remember my old [*Foundation*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-s%5F3b5fRd8&ref=kevinrose.com)[ series](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-s%5F3b5fRd8&ref=kevinrose.com), this lives in that spirit — conversations that go deep, but with a different focus. Rather than only spotlighting household names in tech, *The Next* is about showing you the upcoming trends, emerging founders, and the technologies worth paying attention to before they become the next big thing. I’m currently building out a new studio (mine, as you may remember, burned down in the LA fires), with construction wrapping up in early January. More details soon. --- ## 🍻 Life Update: 6.5 Months of Sobriety I recently completed a little over six months of sobriety. It was an experiment I’d been wanting to run for a long time — mainly to understand what life felt like without alcohol as a default social lubricant. It was a wild road, actually much harder than I had anticipated. The first few weeks were the honeymoon period; then the “I made it to a month, you deserve a drink!” feelings crept in. What’s interesting is exploring *who* it is that’s saying that. Who is saying I deserve a drink — and to whom? And more importantly: How far can you trace that congratulatory chatter? What relief is it looking for? These are deeper questions, but they dovetail nicely with my meditation practice, so I enjoy exploring them. After the six-month mark, I decided to break sobriety at a nice dinner with friends. The verdict? Alcohol unfortunately isn’t as much fun as it once was. Even a couple of drinks dramatically change my sleep, mood, and meditation practice. So, I plan to return to that sober life, but without making alcohol my enemy. There’s a quote from Anthony de Mello that has stayed with me throughout this process: > “When you fight something, you’re tied to it forever. As long as you’re fighting it, you’re giving it power.” I don’t want to define myself by what I’m against. I want freedom — the kind that comes from indifference, not resistance. A note of caution: Many people can’t come to a place of indifference, and the daily struggle is real. I have several sober friends who have found freedom and clarity through committed 12-step programs. If you find yourself in this boat, please look into these — there is great wisdom in many of these organizations. --- ## The Random Show with Tim Ferriss We’re back! Topics include building with AI, holiday gift guides, sober life, Tim’s new girlfriend, and more. That’s it for this newsletter. Thanks for being here and reading this far. In a world of infinite scroll and constant distraction, the fact that you signed up to receive words in your inbox still feels like a small miracle. More soon, and wishing you fantastic holidays with your loved ones. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/c0eacfed-e751-4822-9490-699401fecae7_2000x350-1.png) ### Build any business with AI URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/build-any-business-with-ai/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:13:19.000Z Hi everyone 👋 – I know it’s been a minute since I’ve dropped into your inbox. Life has been wonderfully chaotic, and I’ve been deep in some exciting projects. But I’m back with something I think you’re really going to enjoy. I just [recorded a podcast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCgFzUyCo%5Fs&ref=kevinrose.com) with my longtime friend [Anish Acharya](https://x.com/illscience?ref=kevinrose.com), who’s now a General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz. We go way back – we worked together at Google – and somehow we’ve never actually sat down and recorded a conversation together until now. We covered a ton of ground: - How the “like” button came into existence - What consumer investing really looks like - The rise of “vibe coding” and why creativity is about to become the most valuable skill in a world - The weird future of AI-powered recording devices (and why they make everyone uncomfortable) It truly is a wild time to be alive, one where anyone with curiosity and creativity can single-handedly build anything they desire. I hope you walk away with some inspiration and new tools! Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Her story starts in a place many of us know too well—grinding away at a high level, chasing perfection, until something inside her pushed back. For her, it the eventual realization she was losing her love for the very thing she'd given her life to. What happened next is where it gets wild. A friend suggested she try sitting at a Zen center. First night, 25 minutes of silence, and despite her distracted mind going chatter (what mediators call "monkey mind"), she felt like she'd come home. That was 30 years ago. **Why you should listen** **For the high performers:** Valerie directly addresses the fear that meditation will make you soft or kill your edge. Spoiler: it won't. She explains how laying down what she calls "the great burden" actually freed up her mental bandwidth. You don't lose your drive—you just stop wasting energy on all the unnecessary mental overhead. **For the curious:** We break down what Zen actually is (beyond the greeting cards and perfume bottles), what koans are, and how to start a (serious) practice. **For anyone who's lost someone:** At the end, I asked Valerie about dealing with loss. I lost my dad over a decade ago and still miss him . Her response...that those we've lost are "right here" in ways we might not expect. A few moments that stuck with me: - When she realized "unconditional love isn't something you give or receive-it's what you are" - Her teacher saying a human personality is just "a lump of karma" (we're all still our messy selves, just held together less tightly) - Time collapsing into a single point where the only moment that exists is now If you're even slightly curious about meditation, or if you're already practicing but want to go deeper, this one's worth your time. You can find Valerie's teaching at [mountaincloud.org](http://mountaincloud.org/?ref=kevinrose.com) if you want to sit with her online or visit Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe. Our friendship, like so many others, was built over countless pints and late-night conversations. Jason opens up about his harrowing experience - a near-fatal stroke directly linked to his long struggle with alcohol. He shares what hitting rock bottom felt like, detailing the frightening physical and mental aftermath, and how he worked to reclaim his life. Inspired by Jason's journey and dealing with some health warnings of my own, I also share my decision to explore sobriety. We talk openly about the social anxiety and dependencies I've grappled with since childhood. Together, Jason and I unpack what alcoholism truly means, the complexities and insights of 12-step programs, and the unexpected freedom that comes from making amends and choosing to live one day at a time. Ultimately, this conversation goes beyond simply quitting drinking; it’s about embrace change, getting older, the strength found in vulnerability, and the evolution of a lifelong friendship. Today marks the launch of "[Less than One](http://www.lessthanone.show/?ref=kevinrose.com)," a new podcast dedicated to subtraction, human connection, meditative depth, minimalism, sober living, and the journeys of authentic builders crafting meaningful lives. [![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/33b41eee-d473-4981-b050-d2865d2eaa65_1000x1000.png)](http://www.lessthanone.show/?ref=kevinrose.com) I know these topics aren't for everyone—but for those who've been quietly curious about a more reflective side, this is for you. Our inaugural episode features **Jason Fried, co-founder of 37signals and co-author of *Rework*, who embodies what I call the "authentic builder."** Over 25 years, Jason has forged a path that runs completely counter to hustle culture, proving that working less, constraining your ambitions, and focusing on what truly matters isn't a limitation—it's a superpower. We dive deep into his philosophy that ***"small is not just a stepping stone, small is a great destination itself,"*** and explore how he's built sustainable success through trust, genuine appreciation, and the radical act of letting things happen rather than forcing them. This isn't replacing the Kevin Rose Show—I'll continue exploring the latest in tech, AI, and health optimization there. Think of this as the contemplative counterpart, the space where we slow down and examine what it means to build not just successful products, but a slower meaningful life. It's for those moments when you're wondering if there's more to success than the next optimization, the next hack, or the next breakthrough. You'll need to seek out "[Less than One](http://www.lessthanone.show/?ref=kevinrose.com)" intentionally—it's available on [Apple Podcasts](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/less-than-one-with-kevin-rose/id1820645100?ref=kevinrose.com), [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/show/7hlVBjijjdCMBrD4uVlqp5?si=N8ZwRbyYRBibuEDXKH6hBA&nd=1&dlsi=3259cb58f5194664&ref=kevinrose.com), and its own [RSS feed](https://feeds.transistor.fm/less-than-one?ref=kevinrose.com). For these long-term goals, gradual habit-building approaches (like those explored in the book [Atomic Habits](https://amzn.to/4hRWVxA?ref=kevinrose.com)) work wonderfully. But what about when we want to explore something entirely outside our comfort zone? When we're not ready to commit to permanent change but need to rapidly gain experience to determine if a new path is worth pursuing? When we're not yet convinced we need lasting change, incrementalism is too slow—especially in environments that demand rapid adaptation. In a world evolving at breakneck speed (AI being a prime example), relying solely on small tweaks leaves us behind the curve. This article isn't about replacing the wisdom of gradual habit formation. Rather, it introduces a complementary approach: the time-bound forcing function. Unlike traditional habit-building, which prioritizes sustainability, this method optimizes for speed, knowledge acquisition, and rapid adaptation—helping you quickly determine which new directions deserve your long-term commitment. ### Staying Nimble as You Age Why is this new approach so important? > **As we get older, we tend to stick with what we know, this is the death of the creative mind — we MUST manually force major uncomfortable shifts to maintain long-term cognitive flexibility.** Regularly embracing radical shifts keeps your mental plasticity sharp, proving to yourself that you can adapt, no matter how deeply ingrained your habits are. These radical shifts disrupt established norms, creating an opportunity for neuroplasticity. The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections is heightened when faced with novel and challenging environments. This is how we maintain mental agility as we age (Draganski et al., 2004). This is especially crucial now that AI is accelerating change across nearly every industry. The pace of innovation means that skills and workflows that were relevant just a few years ago (months ago?) may already be outdated. To stay ahead of the curve, professionals must develop a habit of forced adaptation—diving headfirst into new tools, methodologies, and technologies rather than waiting for gradual, comfortable transitions. Those who can rapidly adjust to these shifts will remain competitive, while those who resist may find themselves left behind. As Naval Ravikant wisely observed, *"*And so as you age, you should have wisdom. That's your substitute for the raw horsepower of intelligence going down."** Staying sharp isn’t just about maintaining knowledge—it’s about continuously expanding and **connecting the dots of wisdom** by constantly embracing new challenges. ### The Power of Burning the Boats The phrase "burning the boats" comes from ancient military history. When Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico in 1519, he ordered his men to burn their ships, eliminating any possibility of retreat. This decisive action left only one option: succeed in their conquest or perish. This extreme commitment transformed his soldiers' mindset and determination. In personal transformation, this principle applies powerfully. Small tweaks keep you safely within your comfort zone, while the most profound changes demand initial struggle and discomfort. By deliberately removing your escape routes—deleting the old app, canceling the subscription, giving away your old device—you create the psychological conditions for real change (Deci & Ryan, 2000). When partial commitment leaves your old habits as an easy fallback, your brain remains split between old and new pathways. But full immersion forces rapid adaptation. The initial higher cognitive load actually accelerates learning (Sweller, 1988), and by eliminating options to revert to familiar patterns, you create optimal conditions for new neural pathways to form, solidifying the new behavior (Lally et al., 2010). ### Two Experiments I’m Running Right Now The recent destruction of my home in the LA fires marked a profound turning point in my life. Losing everything created a rare opportunity: the chance to reimagine my entire approach across multiple domains. Rather than making small adjustments, I've embraced radical changes in several areas. While I'll detail what proves most effective in future posts—eventually transitioning successful experiments into sustainable habits in the Atomic Habits tradition—today I'm focusing on two significant shifts I've implemented as a way to keep me technically nimble. #### #1: Android, Truly, All-In, for Six Months **Yes, I’m selling my iPhone.** Imagine an Apple die-hard ditching their iPhone entirely for half a year—no safety net, no second device. The first few weeks would be frustrating. Muscle memory would fail. Simple tasks would feel foreign (how the hell do I paste something to my Mac?). But by month two or three, something shifts: new workflows emerge, and the new system becomes second nature. This person has now achieved fluency in Android in a way that casual tinkering never could. For me, this isn't about just "switching phones", but rather rounding out my thinking on the future of AI at the hardware level. I believe Google has a massive head start here, and I want to be witnessing this unfold at the forefront. By removing the familiar cues and routines of my iPhone environment, I'm forcing myself to engage with Android in its entirety. This immersive learning experience accelerates the learning process by minimizing distractions and maximizing focus. The initial frustration of switching to Android is the brain working through the high cognitive load. This is the brain using neuroplasticity to form new connections. #### #2: Three Months with the Arc Browser [Arc is the hip browser](https://arc.net/?ref=kevinrose.com) of the tech world—sleek, minimalist, and packed with new features that challenge the way we think about web browsing. Built by The Browser Company, Arc reimagines the browsing experience with features like split-screen multitasking, built-in notes, AI enhancements, and a unique command bar. Some might call it a browser for power users, but I find it more minimal and clever, yet at the same time a massive mental shift in how we interact with the web. A longtime Chrome user who forces themselves to use Arc exclusively for several months will go through a similar process of adaptation. Initially, everything feels inefficient—the UI is different, the tabs are in a strange place, and long-standing browsing habits are disrupted. **But by the end, they’ve either discovered a better workflow that suits their needs or gained a deep understanding of why they prefer Chrome.** Either way, the experiment leads to a real, informed perspective—not just a half-hearted attempt at change. --- ### How to Implement High-Impact Change Here’s how to structure a radical shift: - **Identify a significant change** — Select something truly impactful: a new operating system, an alternative productivity tool, or a substantial lifestyle modification. - **Eliminate the escape route** – Burn the boats. Make it impossible to revert to old habits too soon. - **Define temporal boundaries** – Establish a specific timeframe (typically 4-12 weeks) that demands full commitment while preventing exhaustion. - **Fully immerse** – Treat it as an adventure, embrace discomfort, and track your progress. Once the experiment ends, decide what to keep and what to discard. ### Conclusion — Dare to Make the Leap Consistency (and a measured approached to getting there) is undeniably important, especially for known lifelong habits we want to cultivate. But for bigger and bolder initiatives into the unknown, mindset that welcomes radical change will always outpace one that clings to micro-tweaks. With time-bounding, you're far less likely to fail the trial. Sometimes, the best way forward isn't another small step—it's a leap. Burn the boats, force the shift, and see just how adaptable you really are. My gut says you’ll surprise yourself. Good luck, and I'll report back on Android, Arc, and others. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/e64c6292-6a49-4c69-bc62-83c87a4a4094_2000x350.png) --- **References** - Bransford, J. URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/oh-hello-2025-lets-begin/ Last updated: 2026-10-14T19:54:53.000Z ## Hello 2025! As we turn the page to a new year, I'm setting an intention to focus on health—both physical and mental. For me, this means embracing movement-based exercises that prioritize mobility and flexibility ([great video on this](https://youtu.be/puoOeoE5x6A?si=NZKKP7KsFbTw5iK%5F&ref=kevinrose.com)), diving deeper into meditation (**see below, join my 30-day challenge**) to cultivate mental clarity, and letting go of habits that no longer serve my well-being. First up on that list is alcohol. ### Let's Talk About Alcohol I don't smoke weed (no judgment, but it just doesn't do it for me), but I do like the occasional cocktail or glass of wine. I find that in moderation, alcohol can be fun—whether it's a shared bottle of wine over dinner or a beer with a friend (I wish beer didn't jack my stomach up now — #old). But as the years pass, I've realized that the hangovers get worse, even with minimal intake, the recovery takes longer, and the science increasingly supports what many of us have suspected: *the less, the better.* That said, for me, the occasional drink provides a sense of relaxation or helps mark a special moment. My 2025 plan? **Zero alcohol unless it’s a special event with close friends or my partner, and if I do indulge, I'm limiting myself to two drinks max.** Ultimately, my goal is to keep my monthly intake below eight drinks, which averages to about two drinks a week. ***This decision isn't about deprivation—it's about making choices that align with how I want to feel every day.*** I'm excited to see how this small but significant change impacts my energy, focus, and overall health. As of this writing, I've had 2 drinks in the last 15 days and I feel fantastic (of course 😭🙂). I'll keep you updated as I navigate this experiment—cheers to a healthier new year! --- ### Reversing Course—Upcoming Live Diggnation! Speaking of drinking... We're bringing back ***Diggnation Live***! This is a big deal—our first live show in a decade. For those of you who've followed the journey, you know how much this podcast means to us. The pace of AI advancement is honestly mind-blowing. I'm seeing demos of upcoming tech (3-6 months out) that will make today's capabilities stale and obsolete… Today, I want to share one of my essential AI tools. While my daily toolkit includes Notebook LM, ChatGPT, and Claude, there's one that's become indispensable: **Perplexity**. After several months of use, it's largely replaced Google as my go-to search tool. What sets it apart is its real-time data processing and rich multimedia results, weaving together text, videos, and images in a way that feels like the future of search. To give you a peek into how I use it, here is an actual query I did this week (click to see the results): > ["worldcoin is trying to verify humans, what other experimental technologies might help fight against bots"](https://www.perplexity.ai/page/experimental-human-verificatio-jqBmpl0MTmO.NFMSMGnfNA?ref=kevinrose.com) ### Ok, so why am I telling you this? Join Our Science Trial. (#72) URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/a-natural-alternative-to-glp-1-drugs/ Last updated: 2026-10-12T00:10:44.000Z ## Friends, I recently sat down with **Dr. Colleen Cutcliffe, CEO of Pendulum Therapeutics**, for a discussion about probiotics, metabolism, and a potential natural alternative to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. Here's why I'm excited to share this with you... ### The Backstory A month ago, I ran into a friend who had slimmed down and was looking fit. These days, I’ve had a good dozen or so friends lose weight with GLP-1 drugs, so I was surprised when she told me it wasn’t Ozempic but Pendulum's new GLP-1 probiotic. Her chocolate cravings (her usual downfall) had changed entirely. Instead of demolishing a whole bar, she could have one bite and walk away satisfied. I've known Pendulum for years (we invested at True), and I've personally used their glucose control product with great success. However, I had lost touch with Colleen and didn’t realize they had a new GLP-1 product — so I asked her to come on the podcast and discuss it. > **Note:** [Peter Attia did a much longer and more thorough deep-dive with Colleen, found here](https://peterattiamd.com/colleencutcliffe/?ref=kevinrose.com) ### What Makes This Different? In my interview with Colleen, she explained how their probiotic actually helps your body produce its own GLP-1 hormone naturally. The science is fascinating – they've identified specific strains of bacteria that, when delivered to your gut's distal colon, help stimulate natural GLP-1 production. No shots, no prescription. The results are pretty impressive; 91% of users reported reduced food cravings after six weeks\*, and the higher the initial cravings, the more significant the improvement. ### Why This Matters Over the last year+, I've watched friends scramble to find GLP-1 prescriptions, hitting up sketchy compounding pharmacies, or paying astronomical prices when their insurance won't cover them. It's wild out there. But obesity isn't just about weight – it's tied to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and even cognitive decline (some scientists are calling Alzheimer's "Type 3 diabetes"). We need better solutions that are both accessible and backed by science. ### Join Our Mini-Trial ***Sadly, the trial is now closed — thanks to all who participated!*** ## What's Next? We'll be collecting data throughout the trial and sharing the results with participants. Stay tuned for updates on how the community is progressing. Exciting stuff ahead! As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences if you decide to participate. I've bounced from home in LA, to London, then Berlin, and now Hawaii for a tech conference. It's been a bit of a blur, but incredibly enriching. ### Walk-and-Talk in the Cotswolds One of the highlights was a 10-day walking tour in the Cotswolds of England with a wonderful group of people. This particular walk was extra special as it was organized by Tim Ferriss (tim-tim), Kevin Kelly, and Craig Mod, who invited an eclectic and fascinating crew to join. The concept of the “walk-and-talk” or “moveable salon” is that a small group of people goes out together for a series of slow, multi-day walks covering long distances. This time, space, and movement together provide an opportunity for deep conversation and connection while experiencing beautiful landscapes. The idea comes from Kevin Kelly, the founding executive editor of *Wired* magazine and a prolific futurist thinker. Kevin believes these walks are a powerful way to cultivate new friendships and have meaningful dialogues away from the distractions of everyday life. He's detailed his philosophy and practical tips in an article called "[How to Walk and Talk: Everything We Know](https://kk.org/thetechnium/files/2023/12/howtowalkandtalk.pdf?ref=kevinrose.com)", which I highly recommend checking out. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/34c3e72a-2c18-4ca7-a84f-982536340050_4032x3024-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/2ec5b7e4-04f0-411f-87f6-ff50e98e8c52_5712x4284-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/28aedd83-84a8-40f9-8ebe-083bb21402ff_5712x4284-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/e52cb81e-58bc-4b24-a8ab-a9d78225eb71_1200x1600-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/00b495b5-8b1c-40a0-9aa1-fcb4f37a9453_1057x1600-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/e841eda2-4734-465b-81a2-f8a45d1d03f7_5712x4284-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/bbfdd89c-e992-43de-aa77-16b0d37648ab_5712x4284-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/92c82f2f-9c0c-4945-a1be-3dd85adb4796_5712x4284-jpeg.jpg) ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/234e78a1-26ba-41d9-b4eb-47c6116683df-heic.jpg) walk-and-talk Another key figure in popularizing these walks is[ Craig Mod, a writer, photographer, and walker](https://craigmod.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) who has become something of a renaissance man in the digital age. Craig has undertaken numerous long walks in Japan, most notably along the historic Nakasendo and Tokaido roads. What sets Craig apart is his ability to turn these walks into multi-faceted creative projects, blending photography, writing, and even interactive elements with his newsletter subscribers — he’s a wonderful human. Craig's approach aligns beautifully with Kevin's "walk and talk" philosophy but with his own artistic twist. He practices what he calls **"slow-seeing"** — a deliberate, meditative approach to experiencing and documenting the world around him. In a world that often feels increasingly virtual and disconnected, Craig's work reminds us of the value of physical presence and taking the time to truly see and experience our surroundings. --- ### True Ventures AI Summit in Berlin Fresh off the Cotswolds, I headed to Berlin for True Ventures' AI summit. It was an incredible gathering of minds at the forefront of artificial intelligence. I'll be sharing more videos and anecdotes from the event soon, but one highlight was my conversation about [Lemony](https://www.lemony.ai/?ref=kevinrose.com), an innovative AI solution that's reshaping how teams access private data with ai. Lemony is designed to pave the way for private, intelligent systems tailored for team collaboration and use within professional organizations. What makes it unique is its approach to AI deployment: the Lemony Box comes pre-loaded with multiple AI models and a software layer, ensuring private, fast, and compliant AI capabilities. It’s perfect if you have private data and want to run it on a little box at home or in the office.\* --- ### Forget $1000/mo. for GLP-1s. Upcoming Podcast and GLP-1 Probiotic Study Next week, I'm recording a podcast featuring a fascinating proprietary probiotic that shows promising effects on gut health, appetite regulation, and overall well-being. This GLP-1 Probiotic is designed to boost the production of GLP-1, the "un-hunger" hormone that plays multiple roles in metabolic health. What makes this probiotic unique is its formulation with targeted, science-backed strains that help your body produce more GLP-1 naturally. It's important to note that this probiotic doesn't contain GLP-1 itself and is not a GLP-1 agonist drug. Instead, it works by enhancing your body's natural GLP-1 production. The initial results from consumer surveys are pretty impressive: - 91% reported reduced overall food cravings - 88% reported reduced sugar cravings - 87% reported reduced carb cravings As a special offer for all newsletter subscribers (both free and paid), you'll have the opportunity to participate in a mini-study we're organizing around this probiotic. This is a chance to experience firsthand the potential benefits of this innovative approach to gut health and appetite regulation, risk-free; more details soon.\* --- ### AI I've Been Playing With [Replit](https://replit.com/?ref=kevinrose.com): I'm blown away by how this platform has revolutionized the speed of software development. With Replit, I've been able to go from idea to working prototype in mere minutes – it's truly astonishing. The cloud-based workspace eliminates all the typical setup headaches, letting you dive straight into coding in any language. What's really game-changing is the built-in AI assistant; it's like having a coding partner who can help debug, autocomplete, or even generate entire code blocks through simple conversation. The instant environments mean you can spin up a new project or fork an existing one in minutes, not hours. Whether you're a seasoned dev or a curious beginner, Replit makes it incredibly easy to bring your ideas to life at lightning speed. I've found myself prototyping ideas that would have taken days in just a single afternoon. It's not just a tool; it's a creativity amplifier that's democratizing software development in an exciting way. Similar to Replit, check out [bolt.new](https://bolt.new/?ref=kevinrose.com). It’s a web development agent that uses AI to allow users to build, run, edit, and deploy full-stack web applications directly from their browser. Think of it as a browser-based dev sandbox that combines AI with web containers. Play with both. --- ### Changes to the Newsletter/Site I've made a significant change to the paid newsletter structure. Going forward, all podcasts and articles will be 100% free, with no ads. The primary perk for paid newsletter members will now be access to our private chat, which has been absolutely fantastic. We’re in the process of modifying [Campfire's](https://once.com/campfire?ref=kevinrose.com) source code to customize our chat further. ### What I'm reading/watching: - [Artificial General Intelligence](https://amzn.to/3NyOzxn?ref=kevinrose.com): The MIT Press Essential Knowledge Series This concise guide offers a balanced and accessible overview of AGI, exploring its potential impacts and challenges. It's a great starting point for anyone looking to understand the broader implications of advanced AI systems. - [Tao Te Ching: A New English Version](https://amzn.to/4feG9av?ref=kevinrose.com): This classic of Eastern philosophy continues to offer profound insights into the nature of existence and the art of living. Its poetic wisdom provides a refreshing counterpoint to our often hectic, technology-driven lives. - [The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self](https://amzn.to/3NwpFOS?ref=kevinrose.com)Martha Beck (who joined the Cotswolds walk-and-talk!) offers a powerful roadmap for aligning our inner truth with our outer lives. This book is a compelling blend of psychological insights, practical exercises, and personal anecdotes that can help readers navigate life's challenges with greater authenticity and purpose. --- That's all for now. I truly love these products. 🙏 ### Using AI to as a professional coach and negotiator (bonus: my new AI podcasting co-hosts) (#71) URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/using-ai-to-as-a-professional-coach/ Last updated: 2026-10-14T19:53:31.000Z This is the podcast of the [full article found here.](https://www.kevinrose.com/creating-custom-gpts-from-world-class/) ### Creating Custom GPTs from World-Class Authors to Build an AI Negotiation Expert URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/creating-custom-gpts-from-world-class/ Last updated: 2026-10-14T19:53:22.000Z Have you ever read a book full of great strategies, only to forget most of them? Even the ones you remember can be challenging to apply personally and professionally. Because of my ADHD, retaining information can be a challenge for me. To tackle this, I've developed a strategy that helps me absorb and remember what I learn. I start by listening to the audiobook to see if it clicks with me. If I really like it, I buy the print version to reread it. While reading, I highlight and take notes on the essential parts. Then, I pull together the key insights into a digital document so I can revisit them later and reinforce my understanding. **This is work...** Recently, I've replaced this approach with a new AI-driven workflow. After listening to the audiobook, **I find the PDF version and upload it to a custom AI GPT**. Then, I chat with the AI to get advice based on the book's content. > *Note: Make sure you legally own the book or PDF you're uploading* ### What Are Custom AI Agents? The "MyGPTs" feature in ChatGPT (**also known as "Personal Projects" in Claude**) lets you create custom chat environments using content you provide, like documents, PDFs, images, and more. This means you can tailor the AI's knowledge and responses to closely match the material you've given it — making your interactions more personalized and relevant. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/f7bcfebb-500a-455d-97e7-7d791321c227_1136x738.png) A Claude Project For example, I uploaded the PDF of [*Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High*](https://amzn.to/3TMOoCa?ref=kevinrose.com)*,* **a fantastic book** [recommended in my AMA](https://www.kevinrose.com/september-ama-with-kevin/) that offers powerful skills for ensuring every conversation, especially the tough ones, leads to the results you want. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/985bd640-e48a-4327-a0c5-a40932078b9a_976x508.png) Uploading the book to Claude Now that you have a fully trained GPT on this content. You can use this custom GPT when starting a difficult conversation that feels overwhelming. For example, imagine needing to propose a significant strategic change to your company's executive team—a high-stakes discussion that could significantly impact your career and the organization's future. By consulting your custom book-powered GPT, you can draft a proposal that sets the right tone and incorporates strategies from *Crucial Conversations* to keep the discussion constructive. **Here's a real example prompt I gave the GPT:** *Prompt:* > Tell me how to address this problem in one paragraph using the Crucial Conversations framework: "I feel like I'm being overlooked for a promotion at work; my boss won't let me take on more responsibilities even though I know I'm capable. I'm being held back. How might I convince her to give me a shot?" *The custom AI GPT response:* > **Your Response:** > > “I’ve been reflecting on my role and the goals I have for growth, and I’d really appreciate your perspective. I’ve noticed that I haven’t been given opportunities to take on more responsibilities, which is something I’m eager to do. I want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to contribute to the team’s success. Could we discuss what I might need to demonstrate to take on those responsibilities, or if there are concerns holding me back that I could address?” *The AI even told me why it crafted the message this way…* > **Why I Wrote It This Way:** > > Using the *Crucial Conversations* framework, the focus is on dialogue and mutual understanding. The paragraph starts with a non-threatening, reflective tone to maintain safety ("I’ve been reflecting..."), avoiding blame or defensiveness. It then gently states the concern ("I haven’t been given opportunities...") while expressing a willingness to contribute positively. The use of open-ended questions ("Could we discuss...") helps create a shared pool of meaning and encourages your boss to share his perspective. This approach aligns with the *Crucial Conversations* principles of starting with heart (focusing on what you really want) and making it safe to talk about almost anything, which paves the way for constructive dialogue. Hot damn, brilliant response. This AI-driven method strengthens my understanding of the book and provides personalized advice on effectively navigating complex situations. This approach obviously isn’t limited to *Crucial Conversations*; the versatility of custom GPTs means you can use them with virtually any text. For instance, if you’re seeking investment advice, you could upload Warren Buffett's favorite books, like [The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham](https://amzn.to/3TUvLfH?ref=kevinrose.com). Your custom GPT could then help frame your investment questions in the way Buffett might approach them, grounded in value investing principles. Or, if you're navigating leadership challenges, you might use [Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek](https://amzn.to/4exloqE?ref=kevinrose.com) to guide your interactions with your team ([my podcast with Simon here](https://youtu.be/MXZLtLFCXVM?si=57HosSq9DjVwfnRS&ref=kevinrose.com)). The possibilities are endless, allowing you to tailor your conversations or queries with insights drawn from the most respected thought leaders in any field. ### Want to have your mind blown further? 🤯🤯 Here is a podcast I made with AI ([Notebook ML](https://notebooklm.google.com/?ref=kevinrose.com)) ***using the contents of this article.*** This podcast was created without human intervention or edits, based solely on the text of this article: Enjoy! ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/b83b731b-6ad7-4153-be41-20417db0ba9e_2000x350.png) [Subscribe](#/portal/signup) ### Diggnation Episode #003 URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/diggnation-episode-003/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:14:12.000Z > **Very Important Note:** > **All future episodes of Diggnation will be posted to the official Diggnation channels, not here on the Kevin Rose Show feed. I regularly consult with folks like Tim Ferriss, the original biohacker; Peter Attia, my longevity doctor for over a decade; and Rhonda Patrick, a dear friend known for her honesty and expertise in the field. One common thread among these experts is their emphasis on quality. While this doesn't necessarily mean expensive supplements, it does involve looking for products with third-party lab testing. Many in my circle, including myself, rely on [Consumer Lab](https://www.consumerlab.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) for this verification - a paid service that's well worth the investment. > **Important note: None of the people mentioned above endorse any of the brands or supplements I use. This is my personal stack; please speak to your physician prior to starting any new supplement to ensure it makes sense for you. Lastly, I have zero affiliation with any of the brands listed below.** ## Overarching Brands I Trust: A Closer Look at Quality When it comes to supplements, quality is paramount. Here's a more detailed look at the brands I trust and why: ### Pure Encapsulations - Known for exceptionally high-quality control and transparency. - All products are certified gluten-free and non-GMO. - Free from unnecessary additives and common allergens. - Manufactured in NSF-GMP registered facilities. - Rigorous third-party testing for purity and potency. - Many healthcare professionals recommend Pure Encapsulations due to their stringent quality standards. This philosophy guided my journey from a novice index fund investor to an angel investor and, eventually, a General Partner at Google Ventures and True Ventures. Today, I still serve as a General Partner at True Ventures, where we currently invest in early-stage startups and manage $3.5B+ with 350+ companies. It's been a wild ride. Along the way, I've developed an investment strategy that's weathered bull markets, bear markets, and everything in between. Today, for the first time, I'm pulling back the curtain to share my personal playbook—a carefully crafted approach that balances growth potential with calculated risk-taking. Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting out, I invite you to explore the investment philosophy that's shaped my financial life for the past 20 years. > Remember, this is my personal playbook. I'm sharing it for information purposes only, **not financial advice**. You should always consult with a professional financial advisor before making investment decisions. --- ### I've broken this article into several sections - **Timing the Market** - **How I think about investing bucket allocations** - **Where I Invest** - **Index Funds** - **Bonds and Cash Management: My Financial Shock Absorbers** - **High-risk** - **Stock Picking** - **Risk Management and the Importance of a Moat** - **Angel Investing: The High-Stakes Poker of Investing** - **Gold and Bitcoin: Your Financial Apocalypse Insurance** - **The Importance of Self-Custody and Physical Redemption** - **Retirement Accounts** - **When to Buy More** - **Conclusion** --- # Timing the Market (when to invest) "Time in the market beats timing the market" is an old Wall Street adage, and for good reason. Trying to predict market peaks and troughs is a fool's errand, even for seasoned professionals. Instead, I prefer a method that Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing, called the ultimate formula for investing success: Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA). Here's the gist: Instead of trying to outsmart the market, invest a fixed amount regularly, regardless of market conditions. It's like buying a little piece of the market's roller-coaster ride at every twist and turn. #### Why I love DCA: - It takes emotion out of the equation. No more "Is this the right time?" anxiety. - Dollar-cost averaging means investing a fixed amount regularly (e.g., weekly or monthly), regardless of market conditions. This strategy naturally results in buying more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high, potentially reducing your average cost per share over time. - It aligns with most people's income streams (regular paychecks). All that said, DCA isn’t the only method worth considering. Lump sum investing technically wins out mathematically [in some scenarios](https://investor.vanguard.com/investor-resources-education/news/lump-sum-investing-versus-cost-averaging-which-is-better?ref=kevinrose.com). However, I prefer the psychological comfort of DCA, especially when markets are frothy. --- # How I think about investing bucket allocations My approach to investing bucket allocations is designed to balance growth potential with peace of mind. At this stage in my life, I prioritize a well-diversified portfolio that allows me to sleep at night while still pursuing significant long-term growth. Here's how I think about each bucket: #### Index Funds (60-80% total portfolio): The Foundation Index funds form the cornerstone of my portfolio. This substantial allocation reflects my belief in the power of broad market exposure and passive investing. By putting most of my assets here, I ensure that I capture overall market growth while minimizing fees and reducing the risk of underperformance due to active management mistakes. #### Bonds and Cash Management: My Financial Shock Absorbers (0-20%) I view bonds primarily as a tool for short-term cash storage and flexibility. This bucket serves two purposes: a safety net that helps reduce overall portfolio volatility, **but more importantly, it acts as a reserve that can be tactically deployed into other buckets when opportunities arise, such as during market dips.** The size of this bucket can vary based on market conditions, potentially **shrinking to near zero** during significant market downturns as I reallocate to equities. #### High-Risk Investments: Stock Picking and Angel Investing (10%) This bucket is where I seek outsized returns: - Angel Investments (0-10%): These are high-risk, high-reward opportunities that have the potential to outperform the market dramatically. - Individual Stocks (0-10%): Carefully selected growth stocks that I believe have the potential to beat market averages significantly. While I expect (and hope) that these investments will outperform, **I size this bucket conservatively, in aggregate never exceeding 10%.** This ensures that even if these high-risk investments underperform or fail, my core retirement goals remain secure thanks to my substantial index fund allocation. #### Catastrophic Downside Protection (3-5%) A small but important allocation to gold and Bitcoin serves as insurance against extreme economic scenarios. --- # Where I Invest ## Index Funds (60-80% of total portfolio) In 2007, Warren Buffett challenged the hedge fund industry by wagering $1 million that an S&P 500 index fund would outperform a portfolio of hedge funds over a 10-year period. After 10 years, Buffett's index fund choice significantly outperformed the hedge funds. The S&P 500 index fund returned 125.8% cumulative return (about 8.5% annually), while the hedge fund portfolio had 36.3% cumulative return (about 3.1% annually). This bet strengthened **Buffett's long-standing argument that low-cost index funds are better than high-fee active management for most investors**. It also demonstrated that **even sophisticated investors often struggle to beat the market** consistently over long periods, especially after accounting for fees. Index funds are the **cornerstone of my portfolio**, with 50-70% of my total capital going into them. Here’s why: - I like to sleep at night; index funds are well-diversified. - The S&P 500 naturally evolves, removing underperformers and adding rising stars (the same applies to international index funds). - International Index funds provide geographical diversification. - Their low fees can significantly impact long-term returns (especially Vanguard funds). > We could argue geographic allocations all day, U.S. vs. International. These days, some political agendas seem to be trending towards deglobalization and economic nationalism. For the sake of simplicity and reduced geopolitical speculation, **I divide my index fund exposure 50/50 between US domestic and international markets** #### US domestic, 50% of index funds: [VOO - Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (.03% expense ratio)](https://investor.vanguard.com/investment-products/etfs/profile/voo?ref=kevinrose.com) Invests in stocks in the S&P 500 Index, representing 500 of the largest U.S. companies. ![TradingView chart](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/a8e9287a-dcdc-49a2-8b39-10a4d683f0ef_1660x1158-1.png) Created with [TradingView](https://tradingview.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) #### International, 50% of index funds: [VXUS - Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (.08% expense ratio)](https://investor.vanguard.com/investment-products/etfs/profile/vxus?ref=kevinrose.com) It seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Global All Cap ex-U.S. Index. This index is a market-capitalization-weighted index that tracks the performance of large, mid, and small-cap companies in developed and emerging markets, excluding the United States. ![TradingView chart](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/e447c326-385c-486e-a4f7-a2770c34bcbf_1660x1158-1.png) Created with [TradingView](https://tradingview.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) #### Why I choose broad international index funds When it comes to international exposure, I prefer broad index funds like VXUS over picking individual international markets. Here's why: - **Simplicity:** Researching and selecting individual international markets is challenging and time-consuming. - **Diversification:** A broad index fund provides exposure to developed and emerging markets, reducing country-specific risks. - **Automatic Rebalancing:** As different markets perform differently, the fund automatically adjusts allocations. - **Cost-Effective:** Broad international index funds typically have lower expense ratios compared to country-specific funds. --- ## Bonds and Cash Management: My Financial Shock Absorbers (0-20% of total portfolio) I think of bonds and cash as my portfolio's shock absorbers. They smooth out the ride when the market gets bumpy. Here's my approach: - **Short-term bond ladders:** I buy bonds with staggered maturity dates. It's like having a conveyor belt of cash coming due at regular intervals. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/1a00a4ae-cd43-46dd-864c-1cab9107d721_1478x782-1.png) **Here's an actual snapshot of my bond ladder at Wealthfront\*** - **Government money market funds:** I use ultra-safe options like [Vanguard's Treasury Money Market Fund (VUSXX)](https://investor.vanguard.com/investment-products/mutual-funds/profile/vusxx?ref=kevinrose.com) to park cash. - **Flexibility is key:** I'm ready to slash this allocation to near-zero if the stock market takes a nosedive (20%+). That's when **bonds transform from shock absorbers to dry powder** for buying opportunities. A short-term solid bond strategy **helps me transition from defense to offense** when the timing makes sense (more on this later). --- # High-risk Investments Index funds aside, truthfully, the bulk of my returns and net worth have come from individual stocks and angel investments. Having a framework to minimize this risk is vital. I like to think of this as the rubber bumpers they use on bowling alleys for kids. In the worst-case scenario, I want to hit at least one pin. **Let’s dive in…** ## Stock Picking (5-10% of total portfolio) I allocate a small portion of my portfolio to individual growth stocks, which allows me to capture outsized returns from companies with exceptional long-term growth potential. **If I’m Angel investing (see below), this number will drop to 5% of the total portfolio; if not, I keep it around 10% (never above).** #### Why Growth Stocks? Growth stocks represent companies expected to grow significantly above the market average. These are often innovative firms disrupting traditional industries or creating entirely new markets — but for some reason, the market has yet to price in this future potential. #### My Approach to Selecting Growth Stocks Investing in individual stocks, particularly growth stocks, requires a different mindset and approach compared to passive index investing: - **Trend Spotting:** Most important, **I try to identify major technological or societal trends early.** This often involves **looking at emerging technologies, changing consumer behaviors**, or shifts in the global economy. - **Deep Sector Knowledge:** I focus on industries where I have expertise or a strong understanding. This might be due to professional experience, personal interest, or extensive research. - **Competitive Advantage:** I look for companies with a strong moat — which is a sustainable competitive advantage that can help them maintain market leadership as they grow. - **Financial Health:** I look for companies with strong balance sheets, and a clear path to profitability or in a sector with so much **long-term potential that raising additional capital shouldn’t be an issue**. - **Management Quality:** The leadership team is crucial. I favor companies with visionary yet pragmatic management teams that have a track record of execution. #### Personal Examples To illustrate this approach, let me share two examples from my personal experience: 1. **Tesla:** A decade ago, [I blogged about the potential for electric vehicles](https://medium.com/@kevinrose/gut-investing-655032e66b63?ref=kevinrose.com) to disrupt the automotive industry. Tesla, obviously, stood out as a potential leader in this space. Despite skepticism from many quarters, I believed in the company's long-term potential. 2. **NVIDIA:** As artificial intelligence began gaining traction, I recognized the critical role specialized hardware would play. NVIDIA's GPUs were already dominant in gaming and began to signal a transition to AI-dedicated hardware. In this instance, I purchased shares based on this news, and dollar cost averaged into a larger position as this thesis solidified. **Both of these investments required looking beyond current market conditions and imagining how these companies could shape and lead emerging trends.** > I plan on making my future trades public as they happen. Not financial advise, but fun fodder for discussion in our chat. --- ## Risk Management and the Importance of a Moat Individual stocks can be highly volatile, and even promising companies can fail to live up to expectations. That's why I limit this to a small portion of my overall portfolio and diversify even within this allocation. **No matter how promising it seems, I never bet too heavily on any single stock.** In evaluating and managing the risk of growth stock investments, I always keep in mind Warren Buffett's famous quote: "The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the durability of that advantage." \~Warren Buffett This competitive advantage, often referred to as a "moat," is critical in my risk management approach. A strong moat provides a buffer against competition and market downturns, offering some downside protection. **However, moats can erode over time, especially in fast-moving industries (ChatGPT is great, but *hot damn,* Google’s Gemini caught up quickly).** That's why investing in individual stocks requires **continuous monitoring** and a willingness to reassess your investment thesis as new information becomes available. **Always be prepared to exit a position if the fundamental reasons for your investment no longer hold true.** This might include signs that a company's moat is weakening, changes in industry dynamics, or shifts in the company's strategy that don't align with your original investment thesis. ### A Flexible Approach to Stock Picking It's important to note that I don't always keep this individual stock bucket full. I view this allocation as opportunistic rather than mandatory. **I only invest when I identify an opportunity that aligns with a well-researched investment thesis.** I often maintain **no individual stock positions** when I lack a compelling investment thesis. This approach allows me to stay disciplined with my overall asset allocation while still leaving room to act when I see exceptional potential. It's a way to potentially boost returns without compromising the stability provided by my core index fund holdings. --- ## Angel Investing: The High-Stakes Poker of Investing (10% of total portfolio) Angel investing is like playing high-stakes poker with startups. It's thrilling and potentially lucrative, but definitely not for the faint of heart. Here's the unvarnished truth: - **Connections are everything:** Without deep industry ties, you're playing with a handicap. ***No amount of diversification can save you from a portfolio of shitty investments.*** - **Expect massive failure rates.** Most startups crash and burn, so be prepared to lose your entire investment. - **Hunting for unicorns:** The game is about finding those rare 100x returns that make up for all the losses. - **It's a numbers game:** Top angels invest in 20, 30, or even 50+ startups, knowing most will fail. - **Potential for astronomical returns:** While the S&P 500 might provide 10% annually, a successful angel portfolio could return multiples of that. The potential for outsized returns comes with increased risk and volatility. It's **crucial only to allocate capital you can afford to lose entirely** and to approach angel investing as part of a broader, diversified investment strategy. ### When friends want to become angel investors I provide them the following framework and ask them to consider these key factors: **1\. Capital:** Do you have enough money to invest $10-15k (typical angel deal minimums) in at least 20 companies over time? ***Can you afford to lose this money entirely, and if you do, will it screw up your retirement strategy?*** **2\. Time:** Can you dedicate significant hours to sourcing deals, conducting due diligence, and supporting your portfolio companies? **3\. Expertise:** Do you have domain knowledge in your investing areas? Can you evaluate business models, market demand, and founding teams? **4\. Access (potentially the hardest one):** Do you have connections to find high-quality, often oversubscribed, promising startup opportunities? Can you wedge your way into competitive deals? If so, how? **5\. Patience:** Are you prepared to **wait 7-10 years or more for returns?** Can you handle the illiquidity of startup investments? **6\. Value-Add:** Can you provide more than just money? The hottest deals often allocate shares to investors based on the value they bring to the company; this often takes the form of advice, connections, and operational support. If the answer to any of these questions is no, angel investing might not be the right path. Instead, consider other ways to gain exposure to startups, such as investing in venture capital funds or sticking to growth stocks. --- # Gold and Bitcoin: Your Financial Apocalypse Insurance Think of gold and Bitcoin as your portfolio's doomsday preppers. They're not just hedging against market downturns; they're your financial bunker when things go seriously sideways. #### Gold (3% of portfolio) Gold is the original store of value. It's outlasted empires and still shines bright. As Ray Dalio puts it, "When currencies are devalued, people turn to gold." I use [GLDM—SPDR Gold MiniShares (0.10% expense ratio)](https://www.spdrgoldshares.com/gldm/?ref=kevinrose.com), which offers investors one of the lowest available expense ratios for a U.S.-listed physically gold-backed ETF. #### Bitcoin (1-2% of portfolio) The new kid on the block with old-school ambitions. It's digital gold, aiming to be the Fort Knox of the internet age. I use [EZBC - Franklin Templeton Bitcoin ETF (0.19% expense ratio)](https://www.franklintempleton.com/investments/options/exchange-traded-funds/products/39639/SINGLCLASS/franklin-bitcoin-etf/EZBC?ref=kevinrose.com), offered by Franklin Templeton, a trusted partner to clients for 75 years, with custody by Coinbase. > Note: Don’t be fooled by different ETFs; [many of them use the same Coinbase backend infrastructures](https://blockworks.co/bitcoin-etf?ref=kevinrose.com), so I choose the lowest expense ratio (EZBC). #### Why bother with all this? In a world where governments can print money at will, having assets they can't touch is like having a financial superpower. Remember, this isn't about getting rich quick. It's about having an escape hatch when the financial world loses its mind. > For the extreme preppers among us (I’m not in this camp). Self-Custody of both gold and Bitcoin are worth considering. Gold ETFs such as GLD, AAAU, and OUNZ allow for physical redemption (minimums apply). On the crypto side, consider devices like [Ledger](https://www.ledger.com/?ref=kevinrose.com) or [Trezor](https://trezor.io/?ref=kevinrose.com) for secure offline storage. --- # Maximize Retirement Accounts While I've left this for last, it should be the first bucket to consider as you build out your investment strategy. However, maximizing contributions to retirement accounts requires some important considerations: - **Employee Matching**: If your employer offers matching contributions, **I prioritize contributing enough to take full advantage of this benefit**. It's essentially free money that significantly boosts your retirement savings. - **Emergency Fund**: Before maximizing retirement contributions, I always have an adequate emergency fund in place. This buffer protects me from having to withdraw from retirement accounts in case of unexpected expenses. - **Early Withdrawal Penalties**: Be aware of the substantial fees associated with early withdrawals from retirement accounts. These penalties can significantly erode your savings if you need to access the funds before retirement age. Maximizing contributions under these conditions is crucial for long-term financial security. However, if these conditions aren't met, I’ve traditionally balanced retirement savings with other financial priorities to maintain flexibility and avoid potential penalties. --- # When to buy more Warren Buffet once told investors: “to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.” \~Warren Buffet ## Market Correction Strategy During major market corrections (drops of 20% or more), I significantly **increase** my investments in both funds and individual stocks. These events are infrequent, with recent examples including: - The dot-com bust (2000) - The financial crisis (2007) - The COVID-19 pandemic (2020) When such corrections occur, my strategy is as follows: 1. I draw from my short-term bonds and cash reserves to invest more. 2. I use dollar-cost averaging to account for potential further market declines. 3. For smaller market dips, I maintain my positions without selling. My guiding principle is simple: **I never panic sell; I buy when others panic.** This approach allows me to capitalize on market downturns, viewing them as opportunities rather than threats. --- # Conclusion Investing is a deeply personal journey shaped by your goals, risk tolerance, and life circumstances. The strategy I've outlined here—balancing the stability of index funds with the potential of high-growth investments while maintaining a safety net—has served me well over the years. Remember, the path to financial success is rarely a straight line. It requires patience, continuous learning, and the discipline to **stick to your plan** even when markets are turbulent. Ultimately, the most successful investment strategy is one that you can consistently follow and believe in. What's your approach to building long-term wealth? I'm sharing it for information purposes only, not financial advice. This weekend, I found myself sketching out a concept for such a device, envisioning a future where simplicity might become the ultimate luxury. As our collective screen time continues to skyrocket, I'm increasingly convinced that we're approaching a tipping point. Soon, the mental toll of our hyper-connected lives may become too great to ignore, creating a market for devices that offer respite from the constant barrage of notifications and endless scrolling. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/c4/63/c463cd53-8057-4d39-88f2-52ff5f685faf/content/images/2026/10/cb0a9d29-1b9a-4abe-adf0-b5f1412e1a10_1792x628.png) /r/dumbphones sub-reddit growth After speaking with smart phone industry veterans, our estimates suggest that bringing such a device to market, including all necessary cellular certifications, would require an investment of approximately $50-60 million. At present, the market for such a device likely isn't large enough to justify this level of investment. While the "dumb phone" concept may not be market-ready, there's valuable insight to be gained from the development process. **I'm considering creating a detailed guide—either a video or an article—that walks through the journey from initial idea to investor pitch.** This would cover everything from market analysis to prototype creation, using the "dumb phone" as a case study but applicable to various product ideas. **Would this kind of behind-the-scenes look at product development be useful to you?** If so, what aspects would you find most interesting? [Subscribe](#/portal/signup) In other podcast news, my podcast, "[The Kevin Rose Show](https://www.kevinrose.com/tag/podcast/)," is being overhauled. I've decided to **kill all the ads** (even though we had some great ones 🙏). Also, I'm slowing down the new episodes to 1-2 per month. I've noticed many guests on the podcast circuit repeating the same information; given the number of podcasts out there, that content is abundant. Now, when you see me publish a new episode, you can be sure I'm doing so because I've **found a unique conversation** worth your time. --- ### Content Up Next… #### Article: ARM Domination Reading the tea leaves, it appears Microsoft will move to ARM based processors over the next decade, ditching x86, just as Apple has. In this upcoming article, I'll speak with experts and try to create a timeline, along with the players and stocks to watch. #### Podcast: The Future of Sleep, Insights with Dr. Matt Walker **Releasing this week:** In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Matt Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at UC Berkeley and founder of the Center for Human Sleep Science. This episode will combine a deep dive into setting yourself up for success, all the way through what it feels like to live a non-dual experience (and what the heck that even is). I also want to leave plenty of room for member Q&A. #### Minimalist Android Review: Nothing Phone 2(a) Plus The [Nothing Phone (2a) Plus](https://us.nothing.tech/pages/phone-2a-plus?ref=kevinrose.com), the latest smartphone from Nothing, continues the brand's mission to disrupt the industry with a minimalist approach, delivering a retro-pixel streamlined Android interface and adds unique features like the eye-catching Glyph lights on the back. Focusing on clean aesthetics, Nothing's devices offer a welcome alternative to the often cluttered and complex smartphone market. Full mini-review soon. #### Lastly, here are a couple new products I’m loving… **The Best iPhone Case with a Stand** I was recently looking for an iPhone case with a built-in stand. I've tried two high-ranking cases: the [Anker](https://amzn.to/4cjBoKQ?ref=kevinrose.com) (I love the swivel function) and the TORRAS case. Ultimately, the TORRAS edged out Anker for me. The TORRAS has military-grade drop protection (the shockproof case passed 12FT Mil-grade shockproof certification. 8000+ rigorous drop tests at 50+ different angles) and MagSafe compatibility. The case is also very slim, and is smudge-proof. [**TORRAS Case, Amazon ($25.99)**](https://amzn.to/4dq1P2W?ref=kevinrose.com) **Creatine for Brain Health (and muscle support)** When most people think about creatine as a supplement, they typically think of its multi-decade use for muscle strength and size. However, [quite a few studies](https://claude.site/artifacts/295c1e21-2308-4e3f-8c77-5ec969570b0f?ref=kevinrose.com) now point to the cognitive benefits of supplementing creatine. For some (me), creatine in monohydrate form can cause stomach instability, but the HCL form is proving more gentle in that regard. The brand CON-CRET was an early advocate of this form, but I've avoided their products due to the FD&C color additives, [which I don't trust](https://g.co/gemini/share/ef89364cf69c?ref=kevinrose.com). Thankfully, CON-CRET recently removed them, so they are now my goto brand for creatine. During this episode, Kevin and Magatte learn how we’ve been lied to about African poverty and the challenges facing Africa today. Including how bureaucracy hinders economic growth with excessive regulations, the dangerous (and often deadly) routes many Africans take to seek a new life in other countries, and her vision for Africa’s future. Since her TED Talk in 2018, she has focused her efforts on improving Africa's economic conditions through innovative startup cities, human flourishing, legal policy, and advocating for economic freedom. This was such an inspiring conversation, and Magatte is a true trailblazer. Her deep passion, unwavering determination, and knowledge on this topic blew me away when we sat down to record. ### Mark Manson, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck (#52) URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/mark-manson-the-subtle-art-of-not-giving-a-fck-52/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:15:21.000Z Mark Manson is a three-time #1 New York Times bestselling author, including the "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F\*ck." SHOW NOTES I'm rebooting the Foundation podcast (past guests include Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams)! More information here: foundationpodcast.info. \[00:03\] Who is Kelly McGonigal, how has she helped me, and how will her message here help you? \[01:16\] What is Nia, and what does it aim to convey through music and movement? \[02:43\] How did Kelly get into using movement as a way to facilitate mental well-being, and what compelled her to delve into the science behind it that she shares in The Joy of Movement? \[05:25\] Two revelations about the direct connection between muscle movement and mental health that blew Kelly's mind when she started digging into this research. \[07:05\] What's the anthropological take on why we experience a high after exercise (particularly running)? \[11:03\] What does Kelly recommend as the minimum effective dose of exercise for us to really enjoy its mental benefits? Should it be enough to scare up a heartbeat that replicates fear and the courage by which it can be overcome? \[14:40\] Good news regarding the minimum dose if all you want to do is feel better. \[18:32\] The science we have so far suggests these two reasons we feel better with even a tiny dose of physical activity. \[19:28\] What have scientists discovered by trying to take the joy out of movement? \[22:06\] Pairing movement with nature (e.g., forest bathing). \[24:20\] Pairing movement with music. \[25:27\] How Kelly learned to love indoor cycling (after hating it at first). \[26:04\] Pairing movement with teamwork/competition. \[26:34\] Pairing movement with animal companionship. \[26:59\] Can't dance. Understanding the factors that contribute to your core affect. \[39:16\] Kelly's take on the modern need for constant stimulation via devices and how it relates to the brain's default state in contrast to different methods like meditation. \[42:27\] Outside of movement, what other ingredients does Kelly find important for holistic mental self-care? \[46:21\] What does Kelly hope are the chief takeaways people will remember after reading The Joy of Movement? \[48:39\] As someone who's spent the majority of her life moving, did Kelly discover and experiment with any movement forms that were new to her during the course of doing research for The Joy of Movement? How does she feel about exercise that takes place outside of her comfort zone? \[52:03\] Kelly gives us a brief history of the science behind her earlier work,, and how research has changed what we know about stress in recent years. A brief history of the science of stress, why our initial impression of it as a purely negative force has been so hard to shake in spite of being disproven by decades of research, and what Kelly did to set the record straight by writing The Upside of Stress. \[53:40\] Kelly's thoughts on how I've been coping with stress for the past six months or so, and why society's need to blame every bad thing that happens to us on "stress" hurts more than it helps. \[59:25\] As a psychiatrist, what does Kelly think of psychedelics as a potential course of treatment? \[1:03:05\] Parting thoughts, and how to best connect with Kelly. \[1:07:18\] ### Tim Ferriss, The Random Show, Spring Edition (#36) URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/tim-ferriss-the-random-show-spring-edition/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:16:25.000Z In this episode, we explore the language of relationships, polarity, energy management, difficult conversations, finding peace and patience, the importance of self-compassion, the search for palatable decaf coffee, panic-selling, serving the moment, and much more! ### Dr. Rhonda Patrick, New Omega3, Sulforaphane Research, and More (#35) URL: https://www.kevinrose.com/dr-rhonda-patrick-new-omega3-sulforaphane-research-and-more/ Last updated: 2026-10-11T22:16:29.000Z Happy new year!
